SoCoBio Student Publication: Liam Jones – Toward simulating offshore oilfield conditions: insights into microbiologically influenced corrosion from a dual anaerobic biofilm reactor

SoCoBio student Liam Jones is delighted to share news of a further publication related to his BBSRC and industry funded PhD research. In collaboration with DNV, his research recreated offshore conditions in the lab, which is no easy task, however through a novel dual anaerobic biofilm reactor protocol, they successfully cultivated a complex, mixed-species marine biofilm. This innovative setup revealed some fascinating findings:

✅ Growth of electroactive corrosive bacteria and fermentative electroactive bacteria was supported within the biofilm microenvironment.
✅ Critically, the biotic condition showed pits with a greater average area, a hallmark of MIC in action.

This research aims to bridge the gap between controlled lab experiments and the complex reality of offshore systems, contributing to more reliable biofilm management strategies for the industry.
