Pathogens, Plants, and Professional Growth: A PIPS Placement at CASE partner Wye Hops Ltd.

Simon Thundow

PIPS Host Organisation: Wye Hops Ltd

PIPS Project Title: Optimisation of the Verticillium wilt screening process in hop breeding

Simon’s PIPS was with his research project CASE partner Wye Hops Ltd. During his placement Simon conducted pathogenicity testing experiments on aubergine plants for a hop breeding company. His primary responsibility was to inoculate various aubergine varieties with different inoculum and substrate types to assess their susceptibility to Verticillium wilt disease. This work involved preparing fungal cultures, applying standardised inoculation techniques, and monitoring the plants to score disease progression and severity. The aim of the research was to optimise the wilt screening methodology used in the hop breeding process.

Simon’s PIPS placement provided valuable hands-on experience in plant pathology and agricultural research. He developed strong proficiency in the scientific method, including designing controlled experiments, analysing data, and interpreting results. In addition to technical skills, the placement enhanced his professional capabilities—he gained experience in proactive communication, time management, and problem-solving, particularly when addressing unexpected challenges in large-scale experiments.

The placement also offered Simon clear insight into the day-to-day operations of an agricultural research and development company, highlighting the vital connection between laboratory research and commercial application. He gained a deep appreciation for the complexities of agricultural biotechnology and the long-term commitment required to develop sustainable and resilient crop varieties, further reinforcing his passion for a career in this field.
