PIPS Project Title: Flow cytometry of M.tb biofilms to reveal heterogenous populations of M.tb
During Kaya’s placement at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Kaya had the opportunity to work with the electron microscopy facility to image her biofilms, alongside conducting flow cytometry experiments. This hands-on experience proved invaluable to her project, as she was able to liaise directly with the imaging team. By discussing her samples and understanding how different preparation techniques could influence the final images, Kaya ensured the best possible outcomes for her microscopy work.
The expertise of the electron microscopy team played a crucial role in capturing high-quality images of her delicate samples. Kaya discovered that collaborating with specialised departments often leads to more efficient and effective experimental results. Where she might have spent months troubleshooting sample preparation on her own, the team was able to anticipate and resolve potential issues early on, streamlining the entire process.
This experience reinforced for Kaya the importance of seeking out expert input when embarking on new methods or projects. She now recognises the value of direct communication with experienced professionals, whose insights can be difficult to obtain through literature alone.
