Annabelle Somers
Tozer Seeds Ltd
PIPS Project Title: Laboratory based assessments of parsnip phenotype breeding trials – exploring new methodologies for the future.
Annabelle undertook her PIPS placement with her Industry Co-Supervisor, contributing to ongoing parsnip breeding trials. As part of her role, she designed and conducted an independent, laboratory-based assessment of several grower-valued phenotypes. This work provided her with hands-on experience in a range of research techniques—many of which were new to her and had not previously been applied to parsnips.
In addition to laboratory work, Annabelle gained valuable experience in planning and executing a field trial. Working closely with the team at Tozer, she developed a deeper understanding of the structure and operations of a commercial breeding organisation and the extensive work involved in developing new vegetable varieties.
Her placement offered insights into both agricultural research careers and the process of designing and conducting academic research beyond the scope of her PhD. The experience proved highly beneficial, delivering both direct and indirect advantages to her doctoral studies and future career development.
Tozer Seeds reported several benefits from hosting Annabelle. Her contributions included both technical and background research, which may prove valuable for future work. They praised Annabelle’s excellent communication skills and her ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of staff members.
During her placement, Annabelle also took the initiative to promote parsnips as a “superfood”—highlighting their potential as a nutritious, year-round crop in the UK. This advocacy supported the broader goal of improving food security.
