Fiona Lancelotte
PIPS Host Organisation: Sense about Science
PIPS Project Title: Develop the public understanding of sound science and evidence with Sense about Science
During Fiona’s PIPS placement with Sense about Science, she organised workshops for early career researchers (ECRs) on policy and media engagement, and she also developed resources to support ECRs in communicating difficult concepts to members of the public. In addition Fiona helped prepare for the organisations flagship event Evidence Week, as well as reviewing policy drafts written by researchers.
The placement provided her with insight into the bridge between researchers and policymakers, showing how evidence is communicated within political and public contexts. Fiona developed her skills in event organisation, as well as the ability to communicate complex research in an accurate yet accessible way.
The DTP was delighted to hear such positive feedback from Sense about Science regarding Fiona’s placement. They praised her attention to detail, ability to learn quickly, and her ability to effectively prioritise and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Reflecting on the value of hosting PhD students, they shared:
“PhD students bring valuable, transferable skills to our work — including time and project management, the ability to juggle multiple tasks, and a strong understanding of scientific publishing and research.”
