The Graphic Design and Manufacturing Sector: A PIPS placement with Inksplot Designs

Joshua Fennell

PIPS Host Organisation: Inksplot Designs

PIPS Project Title: Label production of products compliant with hazardous labeling laws.

For his placement Joshua worked with a small graphic design company that specializes in packaging and label design. For his project he worked on producing labels for a customer in the cleaning products manufacturing industry. In this project he learnt a lot about compliance with the UK’s Chemical classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) regulations. These are based around what labelling is needed on packaging of goods with chemicals that may be harmful to the user. From this project Joshua gained a lot in terms of project management skills as he was working on a project in conjunction with other employees that included a lot of overlap of the same tasks. He became quite familiar with using Adobe Creative Suite which could be useful when it comes to producing papers and posters in his own PhD project in terms of making them look more professional. He also enjoyed working on something completely unrelated to his PhD.

Inksplot provided positive feedback about Joshua, noting that his work was compliant and that he “contributed to new ideas for approaches to artwork” and “kept good records with tasks completed within a project”.
