Understand sampling and analysis protocols: PIPS placement with CASE partner Andrology Solutions

Richard Stack

Andrology Solutions

An evaluation/audit of a PCR panel’s ability to determine associations between the male and female microbiota and fertility endpoints.

The aim of Richard’s placement was to understand the sampling and analysis protocols currently used to characterise semen microbiota at Andrology Solutions. Richard looked into patient datasets of broader PCR/NAAT based assays to understand how these operate in a commercial/clinical setting, with particular interest to see if there is correlation between male and female partners and any fertility endpoints. He learnt how to write and present an ethical application for analysis of retrospective data, and was able to provide feedback to assist the host organisation in evaluating the clinical effectiveness of alternative assays.

Richard shared that his PIPS experience confirmed his desire to pursue a research-focused career. One of the highlights of his placement was working with cutting-edge technological methods to streamline cell line development—an opportunity he noted would be difficult to access in an academic setting.

Through this experience, Richard gained valuable skills, including: The ability to manage multiple aspects of a project simultaneously, including effective time management; A deeper understanding of both industrial and theoretical research practices; Confidence in presenting to senior industry professionals
