Diagnostic Electron Microscopy: A Research Intern’s Experience in an NHS Diagnostic and Research Team.

PIPS Host Organisation: The Biomedical Imaging Unit at Southampton General Hospital

During Charlie’s placement within the Biomedical Imaging Unit, Charlie was trained in the NHS electron microscopy pipeline, developing skills such as specimen reception, chemical auditing, laboratory checks, EM microwave sample processing, ultra-microtomy and sample staining. Alongside he observed specialist transmission electron microscope diagnostic imaging and attended multidisciplinary meetings and specialist ultra-microtomy.

Charlie was also involved in outreach planning, diagnostic research projects and diagnostic service development which aimed to speed up sample processing. In addition to this, Charlie gained experience in pathology and wider healthcare science disciplines within Southampton General Hospital.

As part of this project, Charlie also gained insights into NHS workflows alongside developing knowledge of a variety of human diseases. Overall, the experience working within the Biomedical Imaging Unit was incredibly valuable providing hands-on experience, whilst helping to shape Charlie’s future career aspirations.
