SoCoBio Student Publication: Paige Policelli – Differentiation signals induce APOBEC3A expression via GRHL3 in squamous epithelia and squamous cell carcinoma

Paige Policelli a final year SoCoBio student is delighted to share her contributions in a publication in The EMBO Journal, “Differentiation signals induce APOBEC3A expression via GRHL3 in squamous epithelia and squamous cell carcinoma”.

APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B are genes that protect us from viral infection but which frequently go rogue in cancer cells, driving disease progression and resistance to cancer therapeutics. The publication sheds new light on the behaviour of these important genes in healthy and cancerous tissues. Paige carried out experiments with data generated by lab colleagues to enhance understanding of where and when APOBEC3A and APOBEC3B are active in healthy and cancerous cells, and identify a new player (GHRL3) in the regulation of APOBEC3A.
