Enhancing SEO and Sustainability: A Product Specialist Intern’s Experience at Tocris

Fiyin Adenekan
PIPS Host Organisation: Tocris
Project Title: Product Specialist Intern

In Fiyin Adenekan’s first assignment, the focus was on website layout design and competitive analysis to enhance search engine optimization (SEO). Specifically, Fiyin conducted a comprehensive comparison of how protein degraders were presented on various competitor websites. After careful analysis, Fiyin recommended improvements, such as transforming Tocris’s biological activity information into a new format, which was welcomed by the team.

Another aspect of Fiyin’s role involved selecting vendors who aligned with the company’s environmental and sustainability goals. Fiyin was tasked with finding a packaging supplier for a new product release, ensuring durability and recyclability. Fiyin identified a supplier who met the required specifications and proposed design concepts for the packaging, incorporating scientific quotes and fluorescent cell images. Although the placement ended before final confirmation, Fiyin eagerly awaits seeing the finished product.

Throughout this process, Fiyin gained valuable insights into time management and its importance in handling various responsibilities. Additionally, Fiyin conducted extensive research to identify potential new products for the company’s catalogue by reviewing articles on protein degraders widely used in research. This involved assessing licensing requirements and obtaining necessary approvals from holders to sell the products. Preparing the product presentation improved Fiyin’s communication skills and honed the ability to present valuable research findings to a team, emphasizing the potential benefits for the company.

During the time at Tocris, Fiyin had regular one-to-one meetings with a PIPS mentor, discussing progress, workload, and integration into the team. Despite limited knowledge in chemistry, the product management team was supportive and accommodating. Fiyin utilized this opportunity to enhance his chemistry knowledge, particularly in areas relevant to the role. Moreover, Tocris provided invaluable guidance on preparing for job applications post-PhD. Their human resources manager conducted a practice interview with Fiyin, offering tips and techniques to effectively market oneself during interviews. They had a detailed discussion about Fiyin’s academic and career history, followed by a mock interview for a position at Tocris, which emphasized the significance of networking and self-promotion in achieving career goals. Fiyin is grateful for the guidance and mentorship received during the placement at Tocris, which enriched both professional and personal development.
